Wacky Wedneday featuring The Arabia Steamboat Museum

January 10, 2018

Urban Cool KC goes wacky! We now have a new weekly feature known as “Wacky Wednesday” where we will be featuring strange, weird, or “underground” places throughout the city. We hope you will stay tuned with us each week to see what we will be talking about. This week takes us to the Arabia Steamboat Museum.

The Arabia Steamboat Museum is one of Kansas City’s unique attractions. Located near the City Market, this museum is worth exploring. The brief story of the Arabia Steamboat goes something like this. Built in 1853, The Arabia was only active for three years. It made numerous trips up and down the Mississippi and Missouri River before hitting a tree snag causing the ship to submerge. The ship was buried for 132 years before being discovered 45-feet underground and a half-mile from where the channel of the Missouri River is today.

After recovering the artifacts, the excavation team decided to open a museum. In 1991 the doors opened with over 200 tons of treasure on display. This museum has been featured in several notable magazines, tv shows, and newspapers. National Geographics, Good Morning America, and Antiques Roadshow are just a few of the many who have spotlighted this museum.

To learn more about this interesting steamboat’s story and to see the recovered treasure, you can visit the museum anytime from 10am-5pm Monday-Saturday and 12pm-5pm on Sunday. The cost is $14.50 for adults, $5.50 for children ages 4-14, $13.50 for seniors ages 60 and older, and free for children 3 years and younger. You can also visit their website at 1856.com for additional information.
