Originating during the trade era in the 19th century, Kansas City’s foundation has a rich history and continues to prosper in many areas. Skipping past the early days of the city and beginning with the growth of the residential development era brings us to the neighborhood of Pendleton Heights. Located between Chesnut Trafficway and The Paseo to the east and west and between Cliff Drive and Independence Boulevard to the north and south, Pendleton Heights is the oldest neighborhood in the Northeast. As for the prohibition days, Pendleton Heights has secrets tied to bootlegging and the Mafia. Missouri never acknowledged prohibition, in fact they rejected the idea of banning liquor in the state. So when the federal government stepped in and outlawed it nationwide, many people in Kansas City took to running an underground business hoping to not get caught. One specific area lies in Pendleton Heights. Bootleggers created a tunnel that stretched between the residence of this neighborhood keeping the fun alive and money flowing.
Another historical fact of Pendleton Heights is that the first boulevard in Kansas City, The Paseo, runs through this neighborhood. You will also find a national scenic byway in this neighborhood too. Cliff Drive is open to vehicles only during the week from the morning until dusk that night. The weekends are considered car free allowing for pedestrians and bicyclist to explore the area.
